The pandemic has inevitably and fundamentally transformed the way individuals live, work, and learn. Such lifestyles are now commonly referred to as the “new normal.” Adapting to this new normal demands constant innovation that disrupts conventional practices. Despite the proliferation of video-conferencing applications like Zoom, elderly individuals are less inclined to embrace this emerging form of social interaction.
On the other hand, Hong Kong’s recent wave of emigration poses another challenge to the city. Local NGOs report an increase in calls from elderly individuals whose children have emigrated, leaving them behind. Social workers and caretakers suggest that this situation has reached an alarming level, especially as Hong Kong’s population ages rapidly. The emotional well-being of these “left behind” elderly individuals is inevitably affected.
Taking these issues into account, this project aims to answer the following question: “How can GeronTech be used to develop software systems to support the elderly in the community?” This will be achieved by creating a smart social media platform called ELVIS - Elderly Video and Image Sharing. The proposed project has three main objectives:
- developing a system to assist elderly communication,
- creating a platform for elderly individuals to share their daily lives, and
- establishing a platform to help caretakers better understand the elderly.
With ELVIS, it is hoped that senior citizens will engage in social and cognitive interactions with their family members or caretakers, fostering a sense of belonging in a connected society, regardless of their location.
