Learning to Read, Learning to See꞉ Using Graphic Novels in the English Language Classroom
PI꞉ Dr Bidisha Banerjee
A Quality Education Fund (QEF) project funded by the Education Bureau (EdB) of Hong Kong (2007/1008).
With the rapid development of technology, equipping students with new literacy skills to understand texts composed in multimodal elements such as still and moving images has become increasingly important. Graphic novels, in particular, offer teachers and learners opportunities to explore how visual elements can work together to convey messages effectively to the intended audience.
Using a wordless graphic novel, The Arrival, by Shaun Tan, this Quality Education Fund Project aimed to develop secondary school students’ visual literacy. Recommendations on how English teachers can better support their learners in reading and responding to this graphic novel and foster their abilities to process and create visual texts will also be shared to secondary school teachers.
